The Foundation for Arab Music Archiving and Research - AMAR invites you to the opening of "Against Oblivion" on 22 March 2018 at 5.00 pm at Humboldt Box, Schlossplatz 1, 10178 Berlin as part of [laut] Die Welt hören / [sound] Listening to the World. "Against Oblivion" is an exhibition supported by AFAC as part of the Arab European Creative Platform. The exhibition focuses on endangered oral music traditions of the Arab World, whether secular or religious, in dire need of preservation.
Speech and music are fundamental forms of human expression. Sounds touch us directly, but once they have resonated they are gone. It has been technically possible to capture and play back sound for some 140 years now, opening up previously unimaginable opportunities for exploring culture.
The Humboldt Forum will be reuniting two institutions that are famous for sound recordings from all over the world: The Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv and the Lautarchiv. This exhibition enables visitors to experience some of the fascination of these recordings, supplemented by sounds from the prestigious AMAR Foundation in Beirut.
The Opening Schedule
Soundwalk to the "Umspannwerk" (former electrical substation)
Opening Event with the founding directors of the Humboldt Forum, the exhibition curators, and various musicians
