The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture – AFAC – is pleased to announce the launch of a new grant program, Creative and Critical Writings. This represents a new phase of AFAC’s grant-giving in the literature category, following the AFAC Novel Writing Program 2014-2016 which resulted in the publication of 22 distinguished novels by writers from diverse Arab countries. Between 2007 and 2013, AFAC supported 95 projects in the Literature category, including novels, poems, stories, translations, children’s literature, research, and writing workshops.
The new program is based on an accurate analysis of the publishing and distribution conditions of books in the Arab world and the urgent needs of the Arab reader, and in particular the following considerations:
First, the Arabic library lacks serious works in a field that rarely receives the attention of publishing houses despite its importance – that of critical writings which encompass on arts in general including literature (in all its forms), plastic arts, theater, cinema and music.
Second, the novel in the past few years has been dominant over other literary forms in Arabic publishing, because of the generous prizes that are given every year for fiction. This warrants that support be focused on theatre writing, poetry and short stories, as well as on an artistic literary genre that is still rare in the world Arab: graphic novels.
Third, there is an urgent need in the field of children and young adults’ literature for novels that summarize the wonders of world literature, old and modern, which are easy to read; a practice prevalent in the 1950s which was later abandoned. This goes hand-in-hand with supporting active publishing houses on children and young adults literature in general.
Fourth, the importance of staying abreast of the technical developments in the publishing field by providing support to electronic platforms specialized in publishing literary texts and critical research. This will certainly gain importance in the coming years given the crisis in print media and the disappearance of most of the literary supplements in the remaining newspapers.
Through the Creative and Critical Writings grant, AFAC will open the door to a wide range of writers, artists and institutions to benefit from this grant and to enrich the Arabic library with new, innovative, creative and critical productions.
The grant will cover projects in the following areas:
- Critical writings
- Theatre writings
- Poetry and short stories (publishing support)
- Graphic novels
- Adaptations of international and Arab classic novels for young adults
- Children and young adults literature (publishing support)
- Electronic literary platforms
